In March of 2012, I had the honor of visiting Xela, Guatemala for a week of volunteering and learning Spanish. Little did I know I’d be there on International Women’s Day, a day celebrated around the world honoring women. After class, I spent the afternoon at the center of town watching the beautiful event unfold. The entire town was involved in a grand celebration and a huge, colorful parade honoring women and advocating for women’s rights. In a country in […]
I took this shot as I was climbing down the Santa Rosa volcano in Guatemala. This post was written in response to Where’s my Backpack’s travel theme: Tilted. To see more entries, click here.
I captured this photo as I was descending the steep, slippery trail of the Santa Maria Volcano near Xela, Guatemala. I had risen at 4 am to climb this beast and was stunned to find a group of 30 or so Mayans on top of the volcano chanting and praying. What amazed me the most was the women who carried the entire load of their supplies on their heads, infants on their backs all while wearing plastic high-healed sandals. The […]
Photo taken in Xela, Guatemala in April 2012. I don’t know about you but there is something extremely alluring about hilly streets especially ones in Central America. I adore the colorful buildings and doorways wandering, rolling, moving up and down the hills of this sleepy traditional Guatemalan town. I could have walked for hours taken pictures. Each street was unique and had so much to explore. I have found something special in Central America for it still remains relatively untouched. […]

Oftentimes, you also can find so many treasures and unusual things. I took this photo while exploring Xela, Guatemala where I was studying Spanish for a week. It was really wonderful to see the beautiful produce that was growing alongside the fertile slopes of […]

Greetings from the Highlands of Guatemala…wish you were here! Photo taken after descending Santa Maria volcano on the outskirts of Xela, Guatemala. No matter how tired out I feel or how much I dread doing my daily household chores, this picture reminds me that it could be a lot harder.

I took this photo of Xela after climbing the nearby Santa Maria Volcano. I love this view of the city. After spending a week there and being surrounded by these lush, green hills and mountains it was a real treat to see the view from above. I had always been looking up and now I had […]
