Greetings from the Highlands of Guatemala….wish you were here! Photo taken outside of Zunil, Guatemala, in the mountains. If you haven’t noticed by now, I adore flowers. Their incredible beauty always inspires me and warms my soul. I found this pretty flower up in the mountains near Zunil. I thought it was so creamy white and pure. The elevation is high and I am not sure what kind of flower this is. But it sure is lovely.
Greetings from Santa Maria Volcano….wish you were here! Photo taken on descent from Santa Maria Volcano climb in Guatemala. We were climbing down from the peak of Santa Maria volcano (or shall I call it sliding down as it was muddy and slippery) and I stopped to take this photo of the town of Xela far below. Xela is the second largest town in Guatemala and is in a valley surrounded by volcanoes. I will be writing more about […]
Greetings from Guatemala…wish you were here! Photo taken from La Pedrera looking down over Xela, Guatemala. It was my first day working with the kids at La Pedrera. I walked the steep twenty minutes up hill from the city center and took this shot right outside the school. I felt the cloths blowing in the breeze reminded me of how poor these children and their families really are. They have little food to eat, oftentimes don’t finish school and live […]
Greetings from Xela….wish you were here! Photo taken during El Dia de la Mujer (International Women’s Day) celebration in Xela, Guatemala. I saw her sitting there watching the parade and festivities of El Dia de la Mujer and wondered about her life. Was she illiterate like most the Mayan women? Did she suffer from backbreaking work for all hours of the day? Or was she a victim of domestic violence? I couldn’t help but stare at her in awe and […]
Greetings from Antigua…wish you were here! Photo taken at the Museo Colonial in Antigua, Guatemala. The countless earthquakes the struck Antigua during her colonial days of power, finally forced the capital to be moved to Guatemala City in 1774. Although a lot of the gorgeous architecture created by the Spanish conquistadors had been destroyed and then rebuilt, many of the structure’s ruins can still be viewed today behind the reconstructed buildings. The Museo Colonial had been impacted by the […]
Greetings from Guatemala….wish you were here! Picture taken in Parque Centroamerica, the main square, of Xela, Guatemala during the big “El dia de la mujer” celebration (International Women’s Day celebration). I know this picture may not be perhaps the best but my heart is tied to this little girl who just happened to be looking my way as I had my camera out and ready. As soon as she saw me, her face lit into this enormous bright smile and […]
Greetings from Xela….wish you were here! Mayan woman carrying her goods and walking down the streets of central Xela As most tourists do, I became absolutely fascinated by the Mayan women. Their vivid collection of bright, colorful handmade clothing, their strength and their endurance were amazing to watch. The women are the backbone of Mayan society and have an extremely difficult life. Yet there is one thing that they all still had: Joy. Their beautiful smiling faces matched their brightly […]
Greetings from Guatemala….wish you were here! Photo taken at noon on top of Santa Maria volcano in Xela, Guatemala I love this photo of the brownish colored ground against the low-lying clouds of the volcano. I took it right after the nearby volcanic eruption of our neighboring volcano, just as the clouds began to form and block our spectacular view of Xela far below. We were so lucky to have a clear day! Otherwise all the hard work and effort […]
