Sunrise and Sunset in the Osa Peninsula

March 29, 2018 by thirdeyemom

“Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams”. –  Ashley Smith A little over a year ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a week exploring Costa Rica’s remote Osa Peninsula. Known for its immense biodiversity and raw natural beauty, I was in paradise. The week was spent visiting remote […]

My Favorite Place

March 22, 2018 by thirdeyemom

“The mountains are calling and I must go” – John Muir When I saw this week’s photo challenge, it was pretty easy for me to think of my favorite place. It is by far the mountains! I love hiking and especially love hiking and being in the mountains. They are always calling me and thankfully I will be in them soon enough as we prepare to go on a family ski trip to Colorado. In the meantime, here are some […]

I’d Rather Be…

March 14, 2018 by thirdeyemom

I’d rather be…. surrounded by the joy, laughter and love of children. I just returned from an amazing, life-changing experience in Kenya where we reached the one millionth child to receive safe drinking water from LifeStraw. It was such an inspiring experience but the best part of all by far was being surrounded by the school children. Their joy, smiles, giggles and songs were infectious and it made the experience incredibly powerful. I will be sharing more stories on my […]

The Sweetness of a Smile

February 14, 2018 by thirdeyemom

In March of 2012, I had the honor of visiting Xela, Guatemala for a week of volunteering and learning Spanish. Little did I know I’d be there on International Women’s Day, a day celebrated around the world honoring women. After class, I spent the afternoon at the center of town watching the beautiful event unfold. The entire town was involved in a grand celebration and a huge, colorful parade honoring women and advocating for women’s rights. In a country in […]

Welcome to the “Bold North” Minnesota

February 8, 2018 by thirdeyemom

As a travel blogger, I realize that I rarely share much at all about my hometown of Minneapolis. Despite being known for the cold, long, brutal winters, Prince, and the recent host of the Super Bowl, Minnesota actually boasts over 15,000 lakes in the state. It is also home to one of the largest federally protected wilderness areas in the United States, the 1.1 million acre Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area (BWCWA). The BWCWA is one of the most pristine wilderness […]

Beloved

February 1, 2018 by thirdeyemom

“The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.” – Audrey Hepburn There is nothing more beloved to me than my children. I will never forget spending a morning in an early childhood education class with a newborn and two-year-old child in my arms, and hearing the quote “Motherhood is the toughest job you will ever love“. How true those words have proven to be! Today, as I watched my daughter perform in her final elementary school play […]

The Variations in Valparaiso’s Street Art

January 26, 2018 by thirdeyemom

There is no city on earth as filled with street art as Valparaiso, Chile. Known as one of the best street art cities in South America and perhaps the world, Valparaiso or simply “Valpo” as the locals call it, is unbelievable. Walking through its windy maze of streets, every free space on the sides of houses, buildings, garages, doors and even staircases, is painted in art. The variation in art is what makes it so incredible too. Every work of […]

The Human Need for Silence

January 18, 2018 by thirdeyemom

“Silence is a true friend who never betrays”. –  Confucius I am not one to have much silence in my life. As a busy mom and an extrovert, I love the noise. However, when I run out of steam (which I often do after a busy day of running around non-stop), my body literally craves silence.  Sadly, it is hard to find any silence in such a busy life. So what do I do to recharge my batteries and find […]

Havana's Malecón Cuba

The Weathered Buildings of Havana’s Malecón

January 11, 2018 by thirdeyemom

“Architecture is a visual art, and the buildings speak for themselves”. – Julia Morgan The most well-known spot in Havana is the famous Malecón, a five-mile long esplanade, street and seawall which stretches along the coast in Havana connecting the mouth of the Havana Harbor in Habana Vieja, passing through Centro Habana and ending in the upscale Vedado neighborhood. Known by locals as the “big sofa” or the “living room” the Malecón is a testament of el Triunfo de la Revolución (the triumph of the revolution as Cubans say) and is awash with […]

Reflecting is good for the soul... I tried to capture the Alps in the water but only got the floating clouds. Reminded me of this lovely quote: “Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.” - Rabindranath Tagore
As I climbed up the many stone steps to the Monastery at Petra and beyond, I was called by the Bedouin sound of a flute. I climbed on past the tourists to the place at the end of the trail following the sign to the world’s best view when I ended up here. I met my Bedouin friend, enjoyed a mint tea overlooking the stunning Rift Valley. I had the entire view to myself and felt like I had gone on a pilgrimage where I found peace and sanctuary here at the end of the road. Oh what a purely magical place Jordan is. Like no place on earth. #beintrepid #petra #petrajordania #explorejordan
No words can describe how I felt today seeing the divine beauty of Petra. Built in 400 BC, hand carved out of rock, this place is absolutely surreal. Can hardly wait to rise at dawn to go back and see more. #visitpetra #visitjordan #beintrepid
Have you ever taken a ride on a camel before? While it is an ancient tradition that the Arabs have been participating in for centuries, it isn’t the most normal thing to do. First, getting on the camel before he stands up is easy. Trying to stay atop when he does actually stand is a bit strange. Then you are so high up in the sky. As the camel starts to walk you jolt back and forth and back and forth trying to balance yourself and stay on. After about ten minutes the uncomfortableness sets in as it is much harder than riding a horse. Yet to be so high in the sky in the desert is truly spectacular. An experience I will never forget. ✨✨✨✨ #Beintrepid #Wadirum #Jordan #discoverjordan #visitjordan
Morning just after sunrise at our camp at Wadi Rum. So much beauty and peace. The expansive beauty of this place is hard to capture or put into words. #Beintrepid #jordan #discoverjordan #wadirum #visitjordan
