The Human Need for Silence

“Silence is a true friend who never betrays”. –  Confucius

I am not one to have much silence in my life. As a busy mom and an extrovert, I love the noise. However, when I run out of steam (which I often do after a busy day of running around non-stop), my body literally craves silence.  Sadly, it is hard to find any silence in such a busy life.

So what do I do to recharge my batteries and find peace? I escape for a walk in nature around my lovely urban lake where I seek solace and silence. I try to let the busy chatter in my mind slow and just notice the sounds of the birds, the whistling of the air and the occasional passing of a car or airplane.

I often find that an hour of silence out walking in nature can be one of the greatest gifts ever to my well-being. And the serenity I find at sunset is the best of all. It opens my world to beauty. I walk year-round with summer being my most favorite time yet winter walking affords a lot of silence as I’m normally the only one out on some of the very cold days.

As a long term Minnesota resident, I’ve learned early on that the key to surviving winter here is to get outside and enjoy it, rain or shine, sleet or snow, hot or cold. Even on the coldest days of all, where the wind chill dips well below zero you can find beauty and also enjoy the silence of having the entire place all to yourself! (Since no one else is crazy enough to get out of their house!).

I find that being in silence two or more times a day, will help me be at peace with my thoughts and goals for the future.
