Greetings from Peru….wish you were here!

This photo was taken in November 2001 on a trip to Peru in the village of Cusco.  The children are being “paid” for the photo opportunity yet the only one smiling was the llama!  I found it hilarious yet sad at the same time as the children live in so much poverty and education is a rare treat.

It was a heart wrenching trip as we left two months after 9/11 and boarding a plane to a third-world country (my first trip to South America) felt exhilarating and scary.  But the things I learned and saw made the trip increase my desire to get off the beaten path and see the world less traveled.
